Ident

A ident is used to identify a company or channel within TV and film. An ident helps to increase the popularity of some film company's for example Disney, over time this company in particular has become one of the worlds best film company's; however over time Disney was changed there ident but has still travelled along the same track.

Company's rely on there ident to improve the status of a company for example the Warner Bros ident is way more eye catching than if they had used clip art.  A company's ident usually is linked to what they produce and some TV companies will update their idents regularly so that it is relevant.

Audience Feedback

When coming up with our idea for our opening sequence; and after deciding to do a crime - drama we talked about who our film would be aimed at. After doing our pitch we asked our class who would watch our film and everyone said yes. This was our feedback:
  • Very Engaging
  • Made Me want to watch it
  • True story - adds to the effect (tension ) to viewers, appealing to teenagers
  • Lots of suspense
  • Set in local area
  • Research to back it up
  • Good enigmas
From doing our pitch i have learnt how to sell a film idea and make a good pitch.
Here are our audience when we did our pitch.

Pitch

We did our pitch to an audience, for our pitch we briefly explained what we had planned for our opening sequence. I think that our opening sequence went really well because we explained our idea for our opening sequence really well. We went through what shots we were going to use and where we were planing to film and how we were going to eventually come up with our final opening sequence.

Animatic

Animatic

This is our animatic for our film opening.

From making this animatic i learnt a bit more about premier pro which will help when we go to edit our opening sequence. This also gives me an idea of how we will end up with our final product. I will use this animatic to refer to whilst i am editing what will be our opening sequence.

Opening Sequence Task

For our opening task we have chosen to create the opening sequence to a Crime - Drama, to start of we looked at different openings to crime - dramas for TV shows and films such as The Blair Witch Project, Stranger Things and The Missing which is a student film. After looking at these opening sequences we thought about the conventions of a crime - drama, we came up with:

  • Mystery
  • Realistic characters, settings and story lines
  • Tension
  • Journey of character development
After working this out we decided on a storyline. We are basing our sequence on the disappearance of Genette Tate, a girl who went missing at the age of 13 and has been missing for 38 years, making her one of the longest missing people in the UK, we are setting it in 1978, Aylesbeare but with a modern twist.

After deciding the plot for our opening sequence we looked at the Narrative Enigmas which are:

  • Where did she go?
  • What happened to her?
  • Was it planned?
  • How long has she been missing?
We will be filming in 3 different places:

  • Sidmouth Road
  • Aylesbeare
  • Within Lane
We will be using both our digetic and non-digetic sound. the sound of the cars and the girls talking will be our digetic sound and the echo of girls talking and emphasised door clicking will be our non - digetic sound.

We will be using a few shots to record our opening sequence:

  • Match on Action
  • Low angle shot
  • Tracking shot
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Close up shot

Editing Terminology

Cutaway
This is used to include the shot that is not necessary but however it shows a related object, action or person. This is usually placed in the middle of a regular shot. It is typically use in Action films.

Dissolve
This cut is used when 2 shots cross over and you are able to see both clearly, this is usually used to link two people or two situations together.

Fade
This is a type of moving image where it fades into typically black or white. This cut is used typically at the end of a dramatic scene when something bad has happened.

Jump Cuts
A jump cut moves to a different part of a scene but missing out the action. For example someone could walk to the other side of the room and they would cut out the person crossing the room.

Wipe
This can be used in many different ways, usually depending on the type of scene it is being used in. It wipes one image of the screen and is replaced by another one, typically between scenes.

Student Film Opening Analysation

The Edge
I think this film opening is really well produced, First of all the editing of the titles such as the directors name and the IDENT are really well placed and animated. Also the sound used behind it reinforces what is going on in this opening sequence and that this will be an action film. Another aspect of this is that there are a lot of camera movements and angles used such a P.O.V shot and an extreme close up shot, the use of these shots creates an intense feeling within the opening sequence.

Film Openings

The Usual Suspects

In this film opening the dramatic use of a death is used to create the idea of suspense and tension. This also suggests that this film will be an action film. Another aspect of this opening sequence is the use of the fire which adds to the suspense in the opening sequence,The music used in the opening sequence is very deep and intense which adds to the tension, the camera doesn't point at the man face in this opening sequence which creates suspension because of the unknown figure.

Blade

In this opening sequence everything links up first of all they walk through a room full of animal carcases, this then is linked to when they are spraying blood through the sprinklers in the roof, this creates suspense in the film. The intense music from the club adds to the intense atmosphere.

Mottai Boss

In this opening sequence the use of the helicopter and clothing show wealth and importance this is reinforced by the way that people greet him. The music in the background is similar to that used in an action film. From the entrance that the man makes we can tell that he is one of the main characters. The sound effect used when he winks or taps his head sound very electronic almost as if he is a robot.

Editing

Editing

For my preliminary task I had to edit it the footage. To do this I used premiere pro, Imported the clips and then cut each one so that it became a sequence. I also had to make sure that none of the clips were blurry. By editing this video I learned that editing is a lot more time consuming than I first thought, I also had to go over all of the clips multiple times to make sure that they fitted the criteria for our preliminary task.

My Preliminary Task

This is my preliminary task. For this it had to be a 1 minute to 2 minute video that had to include 3 shots; Shot reverse Shot, 180 degree rule and match on action. it had to include someone walking through and opening a door, this person then had to sit opposite someone else and have a conversation with them. I think that the outcome for this task was good because it meet the length requirements and included all camera shots. I also think that the lighting was also because it didn't white wash any of the characters and it also wasn't so dark that the screen was black. To improve next time i think that we should shot in a different location because the we have more room for different settings and establishing shots.

Match on Action

Match on Action

Match on Action is a consistent movement that is used in Movies and TV Shows. It is used in quick shots where a character is doing a simple action such as talking to another person before moving to the other side of the room or walking through a door.
Here is an example from The Hunger Games.(0.07-0.10)

Here is my own example of someone walking through a door using match on action

Composition

The Golden Rectangle

The golden rectangle is the idea that is applied to things in nature. It is the idea used in photographs so it is in proportion this is usually used in nature photography.
Here is an example where The Golden Rectangle would apply.

The Rule Of Odds
The rule of odds is the idea that when looking at a picture you pair things up this then means that there is always one thing in the picture that you haven't seen so you repeatedly look at the composition.
Here is an example of where the rule of thirds would apply.

Leading Lines
Leading Lines are a type of composition where there are lines of an object run into the main object in an image.
Here is an example of where Leading Lines would apply.

Strong Diagonal
A strong diagonal is a type of leading line in composition that makes an image more interesting and dynamic.
Here is an example of where strong diagonals would apply.

Lines of Sight
Lines of sight are when a person in a picture of a painting is looking towards the main object in the picture.
Here is an example of where lines of sight would apply.

Point of View
Point of view is when in a picture it is focused on someone however not in their direct eye line for example behind or above them, this can make an image more dynamic.
Here is an example of where point of view would apply.

Framing
Framing is used to draw the viewers eyes towards the main object in the picture, this also is also used to create a sense of depth or to create context for a picture or a piece of artwork.
Here is an example of where framing would apply.

Simplify
Simplify is to try and remove unnecessary objects from your picture because they will only distract from the main object in the picture.
Here is an example of where simplifying would apply.

Fill the Frame
Fill the Frame is where when a photo is taken because there is often sections of the background shown, they are cropped out of the image this is to focus in on the main image in the picture.
Here is an example of where Filling the Frame would Apply.

Active Space
Active space is when you leave space in a photograph between the side of the picture and and the subject.
Here is an example of where Active Space would apply.

From looking into this i have learnt that composition is important in shooting any scene within a film of TV show. It makes each shot more interesting for an audience member. (None of these images were taken by me)

The rule of thirds

The Rule of Thirds is a popular rule in photography that deals with the composition of pictures. This rule states that if the main object in the picture is off centre then it makes the picture more intriguing. This rule is the basics for a good shot.
If you imagine that you have split a picture into 9 different sections like this.

For example in the picture below if you were to separate it into 9 different sections then the insect would be off centred this is to draw people into the picture.

Here is my own example. I took this because the rocks draws you into the middle of picture where there is only one leaf.

Big Close Up
A Big close up shot is typically used in movies to show a characters facial expression, it also increases the itemise in a particular scene between the character and an audience member.

My 5 Favourite Music Videos

                                1.  Middle - DJ Snake ft. Bipolar Sunshine
Middle was released 16th March 2016 and is featured on DJ snakes latest album Encore. I really like this music video because it is a unique story line for a music video. It has an underling message which is that cultural differences are still sometimes not accepted in society.

                                                2. Sia - The Greatest
The Greatest music video was released 5th September 2016, it is Sia's tribute to the lost victims of the Orlando. I really like this video because it has a deep underling meaning and because the video is made of dark dull colours it is contrasted by the rainbow which is the flag for LGBT+ which is symbolic because the shooting was in a gay bar in Orlando.

3. Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth - See You Again
See you again music video was released 6th April 2015, it is featured on the soundtrack for Fast and Furious 7. I really like this video because of the idea behind this music video, It was made to honour Paul Walker who passed away in November 2013. Also the use of scenes from the film where used which fitted along with the song which i thought looked pretty cool.

4. R5 - Heart Made Up on You
Heart made up on you was released 5th August 2014 and features on their album Sometime Last Night. I really like the concept behind this video because it helps to tell the story behind the lyrics in this song. I also use of special effects in this video because it adds effect.

5. Nathan Sykes - Over and Over Again
Over and Over again was released 28th October 2015 and features on Nathan's new album Unfinished business which is set to be released 4th November 2016. I really like this vide because of way that the shots switch between when she is an elder and when they were younger. I also like the way that the theme of love is portrayed through out this music video.

From looking at different music videos in depth i have learnt what different music producers do so that it makes the music video what it is. I also learnt that certain shots are used to make a music video more interesting.

Camera Shots: 180 Degree rule

180 Degree rule

This is another camera shot that is typically used between 2 characters who are having a conversation, the rule states that you imagine a 180 degree line in the characters eye line and you cannot cross that line. This shot can be established in any environment and is typically used in films and TV shows.

An example of this is is in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In this scene the 180 degree rule is used to capture the emotion coming from Haymitch and Katniss.

Here is my own example of a 180 degree rule.

Now that i have learnt about rule of thirds i would re look at the framing of this shot because i think that you can see too much of the background, i would also next time use a tripod so that the shot was not shaky because if it is it ruins the shot.

Poster Analysis

This is my poster analysis for Kingsman Secret Service.

From analysing this poster i have learned what makes a film poster interesting and what draws people in to make them want to view it such as the colours used or the positioning of certain things within the poster. I also learnt about why certain text is put on the movie poster for example a main actor or actress, the film title and the release date for the movie.

My Preliminary Task

For my preliminary task i have to make a short scene between 2 people where one person enters and sits down opposite another and they have a conversation and i have to also come up with an ending.

Camera Shots: Shot reverse shot

Shot reverse shot

This is a camera angle that is typically used when two characters are in a conversation. This shot can be set up anywhere such as a cafe or beside a river of at a pub or in a house. The clip below is an example of a shot reverse shot in Kingsman: Secret Service.

I have now created my own shot reverse shot sequence we choose two people who stood opposite each other and had a conversation which we recorded with our phones. We first of all recorded a shot from the side of person A and B, we then changed the angle of the camera so it was on Person A over Person Bs shoulder the shot then changes so it is on Person B over Person As shoulder.

Film Reviews

Kingsman

Kingsman is a spy action comedy film, that was released in January 2015; starring Colin Firth this action packed film is based on an Elite Secret service, when a young man called Gary Unwin also know as Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is asked by a member of the Kingsmans secret service, Harry Hart (Colin Firth) to join them. I enjoyed this fill because every scene there was something going on, also the film didn't just follow one story line it followed two different story lines until they met at the end of the film. I also found that in this film that it ended where the film started with the scene at the pub however Eggsy had taken Harrys place repeating the line 'Manners make a man' which is an iconic line in this film.

Inception

Inception is a science fiction heist thriller film that was released 8th July 2010 and was directed by Christopher Nolan. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief who is able to enter steal peoples secrets from there subconscious and can enter peoples dreams. They devise a plan to create a dream with in a dream which will have 3 levels that is called Inception Ariadne (Ellen Page) who is an architect student is asked to design all 3 levels of the labyrinth. I really enjoyed this film because even though it was a complicating story line it had a deep underling meaning to it which i thought was really cool, also the way that some characters where portrayed in the film was interesting especially the way that the character of Dom Cobb was portrayed as not only a good character but also it showed that he had a bad side which is something that is true in everyone which i thought was a cool concept.

The Matrix

The Matrix is a American-Australian science fiction film that was released 11th June 1999 and was directed by The Wachowski Brothers. Thomas Anderson leads a double life as a computer programmer and as a hacker who works under the alis of Neo. After being given a choose of the red pill or the blue pill, the red one would give hime the availability to learn the truth about the matrix or the blue pill which will send him back to reality, he chooses the red pill. I liked this film because it had a complicated story line and alot of the scenes in this film had another meaning that was not shown or supposed to be expressed in the film.

Scott Pilgram

Scott Pilgram is a action comedy film that was released 25th August 2010 and was directed by Edgar Wright. It based around a boy called Scott Pilgam (Michael Cera) who falls in love with a girl called Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) but however to date her he first has to date her 7 evil ex's. Whilst he is fighting all of her ex's he loses friends after his band The Sex Bob-Omb gets a record deal however in a protest he leaves the band. I really liked this film because it had alot of action scenes in it.
