Editing ideas

For our final opening sequence, i will be editing all the shots together. We have decided to do a crime - drama, so because of this i went away and looked at the type of editing that was used to create a creative sequence in a crime - drama.

For example, cross - cutting is typically used to create tension  this is where the editor uses two scenes and alternates between them within a sequence, this usually suggests that the 2 scenes are linked or are significant.

There are 3 stages in the editing process:
  • Editor Cut
  • Directors Cut
  • Final Cut
The Editors cut comes first this is usually longer than the final film, this is strung together by shots from each day discussed between the Director and Editor.

The Directors cut is next this is a collaboration usually between the Director and Editor. They sit down and got through each scene in great detail this usually brings up plot holes this is where there may be missing scenes or missing sequences, scenes are usually reordered, shortened and tweaked during this period.

The Final cut is the last stage in editing. This is usually run by one of the producers who represents the production company.

For our film, opening i have decided go use slow transitions between each shot because thus creates tension for an audience member because of the extended length of the shot. I will also be deciding how to include the titles into our film opening, this is important because the titles such as the production company are important in order to recognize a company's movies.

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-en-scene is a French term borrowed from a Theatrical Term 'put into the scene', this term is used when looking at any scene or shot in a TV show or a film. It unpicks the reason behind the use of a certain prop or the positioning of a character in a certain scene.

Setting

A setting can really set the scene in a film, it gives a sense of place and can give of  an atmosphere and often reflect the personality and emotion of a character. For example, in this scene of Katniss running through District 12 in the first film you can see that it is a run down area and the quality of life there isn't great. You can see that behind her things are broken and decaying, there is no color so it gives an eerie atmosphere in this scene.
Setting typically differs depending on the genre of film for example in a thriller the setting will usually be set in a warehouse or a `dangerous area`. The setting is then reinforced by other aspects such as costumes or lighting this all give us an idea of the genre of a Film or TV series.

We are setting our film in Aylsebere and Within Lane this is too emphasis the realism because our film opening is based off a true story and these are exact locations.

Lighting

Low Key Lighting

Little light is used, this is typically used in a sinister or dangerous scene. For example in this scene when they are running through the underground sewer. Low key lighting is used to give the scene a sense of mystery.

High Key Lighting

Bright lights are used to create a different dynamic within a scene this is especially used to create a more upbeat atmosphere, it is also used to create a smaller contrast between brighter and darker areas.

For our film opening we are using natural lighting this is because our film opening is set in the day time, we hope that this will add to the realism.

Composition

Composition is something which is explored in every scene within a movie or a TV show, it looks at why certain objects are placed in certain places and why certain people or in certain places when in a scene maybe due to the importance of a person. It also looks at the distribution of Light and colour, they look at this to decide on if there is for example too much shadowing from a character or if they are too white washed from too much light. With color the same thing applies for example if the people in a scene are in the upper class they may not be wearing bright clothes and vice averse. For example, in this scene dull clothing is used to show that the area is lower class.

The composition of our shots will differ depending on the location of the shot and what scenes we are filming. For the man we will be having a lot of close up shots to add to the mystery as where as the shots of Genette will be further away.

Costume

Costumes play a big part in setting a scene and helps us to understand the character further as a person. Someones clothing usually also helps to define class or help an audience member establish a certain era. For example, in this scene you can see the contrast between the two different classes due to the rich and bright colours that she is wearing compared to the dull and grey colours that everyone else is wearing to show that they are from a lower class. You can also tell that it is set in  the future from the peacekeepers outfits as they look futuristic.

Our actors are going to be wearing average clothing worn by an average 13 year old, the costumes will be the same for the 2 teenage girls. The man will be wearing a dark coloured coat so it adds to the unknown.

Space

Deep space

Deep space is typically used to in capture important people and objects within a scene. For example, if someone is looking at something in the distance in front of them then they will try to include it all in one shot. This helps to highlight any obstacles or objects, this may be typically used in a action movie to show danger.

Shallow space

Shallow space is the complete opposite of deep space and makes the image seem 2D. This shot is used to create tension and suspense for the reader. The use of shallow space makes the shot loss realism however creates tense atmosphere. I leads to enhance of viewing.

Alot of our shots will be done using the idea of deep space to show the distance between the camera and Genette however there will be shallow space when the camera is on the man to add to the tension.

Ident Ideas

For our film opening we need to come up with an ident. An ident helps an audience to remember a company. When we were talking about an ident we discussed that it needed to be rememberal and the ident logo had to be unique and eye-catching. We came up with some ideas, they were:

  • Zodiac Productions
  • Visual Productions
  • Future Productions
  • JEM Productions
  • Millennium Productions
Our first idea was to use the zodiac signs, and the stars constellations. We would use the idea of these to create the ident. We would use the constellations as the ident itself.

Our next idea for an ident was JEM Productions, we decided of this because it was the first letter of each of our names (Jasmine, Eleanor and Macy.) Because of this we planned to use a gem as our ident logo.

Another one of our ideas and the idea that we are using for our final ident is Millennium Productions. For this one we are using the Roman Numerals for a millennium which is MM, we came up with this because we were all born in a millennium.

Regional Identity

Regional Identity refers to the part of the United Kingdom someone is from. In film & TV certain people who come from certain areas are stereotypes. For example:

 London

The main stereotype is that they are posh, happy and rich people, they wear designer clothes and have strong English accents. An example of this is Eastenders which is set in east London.

Yorkshire

They are seen to be people that live in rural areas with cobbled streets. An example of this stereotype is in Emmerdale

Manchester

Often referred to as 'chavs', lower class, drinking a lot and wearing tracksuit. An example of this is Coronation Street.

Regional identity comes from the opinion of someone usually from a complete different are of the world or the UK. This can usually stem from the way the portrayal of this area in a film or TV show.

Synchronising Sound

Today we learnt about synchronising sound and how to use this when filming out opening sequence. We then learnt how to edit this sound so that it is in sync with our footage.

First, we were shown how to use the microphone to record thing such as dialogue. Once we took a sample of sound from a conversation with the microphone you have to plug the SD card and the microphone into the computer.

Image result for adobe soundbooth logo

Then we have to load up Adobe Soundbooth we use this to cheek the sound and transfer it into a file we could in Premiere Pro. We then opened Premiere pro and used this to sync up the footage and the sound we did this by asking the subjects in the short scene to clap before they read out the dialogue.

From doing this we have learnt how to improve the sound for our film opening.

Location Shots

This is a photo of the bridge that she rode across where she bumped into teenage girls that was the last time that they were seen.

This is another shot of the bridge that we will use when filming our final opening sequence. We are attempting to film in as many places that were mentioned in the report as possible.

This is a directional sign that leads you to within lane where her bike was found after her disappearance.

This is a shot of within lane this also were we plan to film the shot of her bike with the newspapers floating around. This will be the final shot in the final opening sequence.

This is a shot of the lane where her bike was found but no sign of Jeanette. We will use this shot for the final shot.

This is a shot of the nearby village hall where we will also film.

This is Barton film where she lived before her disappearance.

1 minute footage

This is our 1 minute of footage that we filmed so that we had an idea of how we were going to film it for the finally film opening. From doing this we have learnt how we are going film our final cut and what works and what doesn't.
